Voxel Runner

By Trundle Monkeys

Screencast
Quick Intro

A 1st-person voxeljs game inspired by Tron's light-cycles.

Description

It's a game designed to be similar to the light-cycles in Tron. You can't stop moving forward, but if you hit anything -- game over.

Scores are awarded based on the number of voxels you placed in your trail until you crashed.

That's it! Simple, but fun and remarkably difficult if you want to get to the top of the high scores list.

Judging Instructions

When you click on the game field, the game starts. use A to turn left, D to turn right. After that, just don't run into anything.

When you crash it prompts you for your name for the high scores list, shown on the right.

It should work in Chrome or Firefox. There are no controls for mobile.

Some people have reported issues with specific versions of Chrome, though those users were able to use Firefox.

What they Used

The core of the game uses voxeljs with browserify. The server is running hapijs to serve the assets & routes. The high scores list is saved into LevelDB. The websockets serving the score communication is using Primus & Engine.IO

Works very cool. The idea with the snake-like game isn't original, though the completeness of the game itself and the FPS view makes you wanna play it and enjoy it. Nice work!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for judging!

Really cool, we really need a voxel-mobile controls module!

I think there is one, but I'd have to convert it to be compatible with my new cycle controls.

Thanks for playing, glad you liked it!

  • contestant

Awesome idea! I sadly failed in my many attempts to get to the top of the leaderboard!

I'm glad you had fun! Yeah, that 2000+ point score is out there, it's well over 50% the maximum possible score, which is pretty insane.

    Awesome!

Thanks! I had a lot of fun making it and playing with voxel.js for the first time.

Changing direction shouldn't be so instant, it's hard to follow where i'm going. Game over effect is cool! (i've seen that many times :))

Haha glad you liked it, though! I've also seen the game over effect many times myself...

I tried to make the direction change both work with the engine and feel authentic to the high-speed light-cycle scenes in the Tron movies. Would definitely have spent more time trying to perfect it if I could have!

I really like the idea of an FPP tron game :) - The camera switch should be handled better - I feel lost for the first half-a-second after taking a turn also the textures are so super ugly :) - fun game though

The textures are from the Minecraft community -- I took the ones that matched the theme the closest. Sorry you didn't like them, only so much to work with with voxels...

Utility/Fun: This would have so much potential to be a lot of fun, especially if there were multiplayer capabilities.

Design: There's a lot of room for improvement on the default-provided tileset.

Innovation: I've wanted to play 3-D light-cycle runners for a while... maybe I just haven't looked hard enough.

Completeness: This really feels like it's just a prototype and waiting for some more killer visuals (I loved the distortion when you hit something), custom design, and multiplayer.

Thanks for taking a look! I will admit I had numerous plans that didn't make it due to spending way too much time solving low framerate issues.

In terms of a 3D light-cycle runner, the biggest thing I wanted to do was have the walls extend the playing field such that you ran up them vs crashing into them. That and multiplayer. Only so much I could do as a solo team!

I'm hoping to get a version out with both of those eventually.

Always a good time for snake.

Field of view being so narrow made it difficult to move around, would have loved to see some kind of multiplayer support.

Good feedback, I will try playing with the camera field of view, though a lot of that is constrained by the engine and the first-person perspective.

I wanted to get in multiplayer but I lost most of Saturday solving framerate issues.

    Little Workshop

I'm not sure why the game requires a mouse lock if it is entirely played with a keyboard. Camera felt pretty buggy (testing with Chrome). I liked the death screen effect though :)

      Thanks for trying it out!

I didn't even think of disabling the mouse lock, great idea!

I'm curious as to what you mean by the camera being buggy -- I'm not aware of any camera bugs. Would like to add them to the list to fix.

When I turn around, the rotation axis of the camera is wrong. It's like it's rotating on its Z axis instead of Y.

A Demo/Preview mode would have made it easier to understand it better

Thanks for taking a look. There is a demo video on the contestant page.

Any other feedback that can help me avoid your 1 star reviews in fun and innovation?

Fun game! There's a certain feeling of dread as you're getting closer and closer to a wall before turning.

Can't wait to see some multiplayer love added.

Glad you had fun! Yes, multiplayer and a couple other surprises are up my sleeve as after nko.

I'll also be releasing the cycle-control library as a voxel library for other people to implement their ideas.

When I tried it, it wasn't functioning.

Hi Giodamelio -- What browser were you using? I've had a few reports of specific versions of Chrome not working, but in general it seems to work on any recent Chrome or Firefox.
