Multisweeper takes the classic Minesweeper and turns it into a frantic multiplayer battle to uncover the board. Rack up the most points by revealing safe tiles, a multiplier kicks in as the game progresses, it’s anybodys game until the end.
It’s MUCH more fun when you’re playing with other people. For best experience we recommend jumping into a game at the same time as a couple of your fellow judges.
There is a socket.io issue on the latest chrome nightlies (14.x). Mainstream Firefox/Safari/Chrome/IE(non ancient) should be fine
Libraries: Express, Handlebars, hbs, node-uuid, redis, socket.io. Icons: FamFamFam Silk icons

jacobquistThis is awesome!
iapainThoughtful workflow. It’d awesome if two multiplayer team could play against each other like vs. mode.
Awesome! It looks beautiful. It was fun to play. Great job.
Fun game! | |||
I really liked this and thought it was well executed. Some of the non-obvious things about extending minesweeper to multiple players were handled great—-for example I liked how I could keep going even if I hit a bomb. Great entry!
trycatcherMultiplayer aspect is cool. Nice design. Works! If only minesweeper were more fun to play… Great job :)
I’m a sucker for remakes of classic games, and this one was no exception. Pretty cool. The background art is great, but the design of the game board itself was a little plain — it would have been cool to see an updated look there. Good work.
allancaVery cool. Was thinking about doing this myself as a fun project.
therazorbladeSocial mindsweeper, sweet! The background is pretty but the game itself doesn’t really match the design. Some visual effects when someone hits a mine would be nice.
Thanks!
Gotta love programmer art right? ;) Visual designers are are not…
therazorbladeAdded 2 design stars after reviewing everything else.
andrewpbrettI’m going to try coming back to this one when more people are around, but I liked it as is. One bug (feature?) I found was that if I mark something as a bomb incorrectly and then try to reveal it, a message appears saying I hit a bomb. Very minor, and you could argue that that’s the correct behavior.
Glad you enjoyed it. We noticed the flag/bomb issue, but it was late in the cycle so we decided to label it as “advanced strategy” instead ;).

rauchgVery cool game, well executed, and only a 2-person team job! Impressive
Thanks Guillermo. If you want we can add you as an honorary team member; we wouldn’t have been nearly as productive without Socket.io! ;)
mattpodwysockiFun, but a bit laggy in the reactions when using Chrome, especially in sign in and hitting each tile. Once that gets smoothed out, quite nice.
Yeah, if you’re on Chrome beta or dev channels it’ll be a little slow due to websocket changes in those versions. A new version of socket.io dropped literally minutes before the comp ended that addressed the issues but we didn’t want to risk deploying a fix ;). I put in a warning for Chrome beta channel users but missed including Chrome dev channel :(. Try it out in Chrome stable, Safari, Firefox or IE9 and it should work swimmingly!
Well done! | |||
Thanks :)
cramforceCool game with nice graphics. For some reason it felt kind of laggy.
Thanks :) Were you using chrome? Most of the lag we’ve seen was related to the version of socket.io we were using didn’t play too nicely with the latest dev builds of chrome.
cramforceI’m on Chrome Dev Channel. I was seeing about 1 second delay between click and reaction.
Yea, a new socket.io fix for dev channel chromes dropped a few mins before the competition closed. We didn’t want to risk changing it at the last minute.
Loved the social aspect of it. Adds a new element to the risk of just clicking around and fast paced decision making. ;D
Thanks for player, it’s pretty fun when you’re in a game and start sniping clicks out from each other, gets a little frantic, and definitely increases my error rate of hitting bombs :)
Wow it’s surprisingly fun to play mine sweeper with other people. I guess it’s more realistic ;) Nice job on the implementation. Maybe to increase competitiveness, each player’s flags should only be able to be seen by the player, so my opponents can’t see my hints. But I guess if it’s cooperative then we should see each other’s flags.
Thanks for playing :)
We had some similar ideas on how to handle flags, either you only see your own, or you see everyone’s flags, but each person gets their own colored flags etc, but settled on a simple community flag system
swoodieTook me a moment to figure out what to do (was never a minesweeper player). But it was really fun playing around with it. Though I was frustrated not knowing how to reset the game (I was in there as “human” and “sara” for days wanting new tiles not realizing leaving the game and re-entering would kinda sorta sometimes get me new tiles if the players before hadn’t used em all.
Thanks for playing :)
Sorry you had a frustrating experience with the game matching system, it’s an area we didn’t have time to flesh out properly, and sometimes you get ‘trapped’ in a game of idle people and have to finish the board solo to get matched into the next game. Alternatively, clearing your cookies should drop you into a new game
I could imagine to play this all night long.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
ChungMinesweeper is a classic game and turning it multi-player is a fun concept. When single-player it loses a bit of the charm (obviously) so there are probably some game mechanics that you’d want to employ to complete the multi-player concept. E.g. grouping players into games before starting, game time limits, etc. The scoring multipliers are also nice, leaving some suspense to the end. However, as gamers join the game towards the end, they have as much a chance to win as the gamers that have been playing from the beginning which seems a bit unfair. This is all commentary on the game design itself, which may not be the primary focus. Otherwise, I enjoyed the game and thought it was a neat implementation.
Thanks! One definite weak spot right now is the pregame/lobby. Ideally, we’d do a better job of getting people into active games, booting out idlers, and sizing the board based on the number of players..
Really nice game and very well done. Loving the details like allowing right click to add flags.
jeffreyI really like this, despite being HORRIBLE at minesweeper. I like the twist the multiplayer puts on the game, but I would have loved to see them put their own spin on the design. I’ve always found that minesweeper has a barrier to entry in figuring out how to play, so it would have been nice to mitigate that in the design. The chat is a nice touch, btw.
Fun game. I love mine sweeper, making it multi-player makes it more fun. The modern background seemed a little odd unusual next to the old school minesweeper graphics. Both were nice, but I might have just picked one style instead of combining the two. Overall it was really fun to play and one of the few games I’ll probably come back and play after the competition.
Can’t say that i am the most minesweeper addict but i know the general concept. i like the idea of playing with others, it would be good to both play against opponents but also to join up as teams. from a usability perspective, sometime “chunks” of cells would just appear and I’m not sure if that’s because another player had filled them out and there was a delay or if that’s what is supposed to happen. Also, wish the chat window was reversed so that most recent chat was at the top, otherwise it’s a pain to continue to scroll down. generally speaking, this could be addictive
