Screencast
Quick Intro

Real-time simulation of starting a new company in San Francisco Bay area. Get advice from investors, meet other CEOs in the playground (mostly SoMa) and hire people.

Description

Startuplife.io provides a fun, easy and real-time way to start as a CEO of your own product, raise capital and make careful investments in the heart of San Francisco Bay Area in real time with other players.

The core message of startuplife.io is similar to the way young companies in Silicon Valley work in the sense that it encourages founders to get out of the box and go out there to solve the real problems of actual users while at the same time pursuing their chaotic startup dream. The game provides both a real-time physical world and a smartphone with our own operating system.

Judging Instructions

Using Chrome, Firefox or Safari, go to http://startuplife-io.2013.nodeknockout.com/ and give a name for your company so you can start crawling around the SoMa of San Francisco. To find the goals in the game, the best way is to locate the Market street (in the upper-left side) and find the action on the lower-right side of it (South of Market).

What they Used

Mongoose, CreateJS, Passport, Socket.IO, express.

Humorous, tongue-in-cheek game. Not something that I can play for hours, but in the short time i did spend with it, it made me smile. Nice hand-drawn style reminds me a little of the new DropBox style.

I couldn't find the park. However, the vapid lonely walk around San Francisco without knowing where I'm going is pretty spot-on.

Cool idea and design i guess, but you can't actually interact with anyone else, so what's the point? Also, if you really want to turn this into a game, you should probably have a map so that people could see where other people are. It's impossible for multiple people to find each other even when they're sitting right next to each other and playing.

can't tell how complete this is? seems like the only thing that happened was getting funded

    Keychain Logistics

Great idea! can you finish it after NKO?

  • contestant

Pretty cool looking, not much to do yet though. Looking forward to more.

This has a lot of promise! The idea is clever, I liked the tone, and also I like the design of the city (I took a star off my design rating for the logo).

I was sad that the game sets you up to expect a lot, with the graphic at the bottom that is almost irrelevant, and initial instructions that are much loftier than the reality of 'walk to a park'. Also I felt like I was striking out a lot, wandering around since I don't know San Francisco's geography all that well.

Looking forward to the rest of Startup Life, if you develop if further!

Nice premise and good looking graphics.

But without any guidance and visual feedback on what is interactable in the world I was left wondering what to do.

Really liked the visual style, but it was difficult to tell what to do from the instructions. If there were better instructions, I would happily play this again.

I like the concept, and I really wanted to have fun with it but the lack of guidance some kind of instruction made it difficult to get engaged.

For this to take off you'll need to get users hooked with a story from the first second.

Immediately after loading, you need to present a narrative to the user, quite literally walk them to through each goal, give them objectives. Since it's focused on startups, instead of "Quests" perhaps you should use validation points and funding rounds, with some kind of exit as a goal: IPO, acquisition, aquihire, whatever ("Congratulations, you successfully created an irrational relationship between value and earnings!").

After "exiting", maybe the player could then start another company as a "serial entrepreneur" (which really means you've started a bunch of companies and never sold one lol, but I digress...).

I think the most challenging aspect of building this game will be finding ways to keep players busy, active and engaged. Give players as many things to stay busy as you can think of, and allow them to earn rewards and build up some kind of points along the way (business credit, credit line, letter of credit, angel funding, vc, corporate vc, loans, customer contracts, grants, CC, even "street cred", thought leadership and industry expertise...)

Good luck, as it stands the game needs some work, but I hope this gets built out!

The idea is great, graphics feel good, but it's hard to navigate through the game itself and know what to do.

    @vigour_io

Looks promising, but I couldn't figure out what to do basing on instructions (clicking on Developer and Designer) had no result, so I just ended up going around the city with nothing to do. Graphics is pretty cute, but the panel on the left gets annoying.

    "funemployed"

I read the instructions and was able to find the park and hire a designer. I traversed the map to figure out what to do next (clicked on a lot of the buildings), but couldn't figure out what to do next.

The game looks beautiful. The buildings sprites were all unique and the path finding algorithm you used on the player is quirky (in a good way). All very nice touches.

Is there a multi player aspect to this game?

Design was great. I had no idea how to find yerba buena and wandered around with nothing happening until I gave up.

Nice premise, loved the look and feel but couldn't find much to do after walking around for a bit.

  • contestant

It looked like it was going to be cool, but there's no actual game play. Looks like a good starting point.

Neat start. I like the graphics but think you could have a little more visual appeal — more colors, maybe a cat or dog running around… I would like to be able to choose a hat for the avatar.

  • judge

Couldn't find "Yerba Buena park". Game would be much-improved by a mini-map, or other way to find your destination.

    Neat art, though.

Love the design, gorgeous implementation, couldn't find the park after wandering for a while. I needed a map!

very cool stuff! really missed a map 'cause I've never been in San Francisco

The game looks fantastic and sounds promising, but there was little to nothing that I could do in-game :/

    @WalmartLabs

Funny idea. Could use more guidance at the beginning. Like how do you get to Yerba Buena park to even start? Needs a mini map. Marked down for completeness as I could not get past initial step to try the rest.

That is very true, building the guidance ran a bit short, sorry for that. As mentioned in the judging guide, easiest is to find the Market Street from the top left side of the map. :)

    CARFAX

Interesting idea, and I really like the look of the application. However, it's not super intuitive how to interact with others.

    • raimo
      contestant

I agree! The interaction with the game area is the last thing we got into right after we thought the controls are "good enough". Thank you for your feedback! :)

It was hard to get around the map without some radar, also I´m using a retina MacBook & the resolution seemed to be too low to navigate around properly. I really do like the designs, it adds something unique to the game.

What do I do after I've hired the best possible designer ever? Where's the player's guide to beat this?

Sorry for stopping the fun so early! Getting the gameplay working took too much time from building it further. Thank for the feedback! :)

you guys had a great demo

      contestant

      Thanks man!

What I didn't mention yesterday is that the game is supposed to mirror the mentality of Silicon Valley "go out there and talk to your users and other companies" in comparison to e.g. Hipster CEO (with mostly managing the finances) or Game Dev Story (similar gameplay focusing on the game development cycle, HR and the office).

Hoping to get to develop this project with major fixes after the week! Will provide a video tonight too.

I like the concept. The HUD makes it really difficult to get around however, especially when trying to move west or south since the area you can click on is so limited.

    • raimo
      contestant

Oh, good to know! Thanks for the feedback! Would it also help if the cursor showed different if you had it on an area you can go to? Will definitely address this on a non-competition deployment.

    Looks Cool!

The graphic and the interaction are excellent.

    • raimo
      contestant

Wow thanks man! We worked so hard on the interaction that we don't have so many perks on the way to IPO in the game! Promise to work a bit more after the week. :)
