MiXBiT

By 7digital

Screencast
Quick Intro

MiXBiT is a Robot powered Virtual club experience.

Description

20 Robot Dj's have been created to perform for your listening pleasure. Genetic data has been collected, processed and analysed from 20 of the most prolific superclub DJs on the planet. This data has been harnessed in the creation of our 20 robots. We have kept our recreations as true as possible, therefore as you will hear, Random tunes are picked from the 7digital library and we have gone to great pains to ensure that no live mixing occurs.

We'd like to say that no harm came to any DJs during the DNA collection process, as you will be glad to hear... we cannot. We collected from David Guetta twice... Just to make sure.

Nice Idea. More genres would be great

Cool idea! I'd love to see the source of your genetic algorithm ;-)

I liked that this team started out with a much more complex, niche product, and instead went for a beautiful passive consumption experience. I see this as a hipper Pandora, and could see it reaching the same level of success. Very nicely done.

Really neat idea. Website and usability is really clean and very well designed.

Really awesome styling of the app. Some more interaction with other listeners would have been nice.

The design and video really impressed me.

Great design! Could have used more interaction with other people in the rooms/site.

Best designed app I think I've seen so far. The video was great also. On the innovation side it seems like its simply a radio station based on a third-party api.

Beautiful design and a great back story to the app. I was hoping for something more though - felt like I was using one of the many other music streaming sites, but with some less features.

Interesting idea, but after creating a room I couldn't change tracks. For me, it didn't seem to do much except act like a radio I couldn't change.

:)) I wish there was time for your original idea though! Not being able to pause the songs was kinda distracting.

When I tried creating a room, the music wouldn't play, but I was able to drop into other rooms and listen.

    The design is great.

Loved the pitch video. The original idea seems cool. Kinda a node-based turntable.fm, right? Too bad the lack of panic at the disco convinced you to switch to the "superior" idea.

Hopefully you come back to the project and continue to improve it. Maybe we can use it instead of turntable.fm during Node Knockout next year.

Thanks Gerard, glad you enjoyed it. You're not far off the mark with a node-based turntablefm as the original concept, time-constraints and not enough planning bit us though. We've also quickly realised the dry self-deprecating British humour in the pitch is lost on a lot of people! We definitely plan to come back to the project. In fact we're already signed up for london music hackday.

I like the idea of analyzing statistics of major DJs' song choices and using that to mix internet radio. (Even cooler would be real DJs.) I like the way the design is going. Some features I'd like to see: social integration (obviously), commentary on what the automated DJ is doing, more visuals, information about the music and what's happening… extras like that would help draw me in.

Great design! Love the minimalism. Would be even more awesome if there's a way to tell the number of listeners in the room from the main page.

I expected 20 robots - but there are only 7. Where are the other 13 robots? Plus I am not sure what the real time web socket component is in this case? For now all I see just music player. Without skipping. The intro video was cool though.

Thanks for taking the time to vote and give us feedback. Yeah you're absolutely right about the number of rooms. Unfortunately we spotted a bug late in the competition when the number of rooms got above a certain number causing the UI to overflow, so decided to setup a cronjob to limit the number to keep the UI looking good. We also definitely could have done a better job of explaining the technology involved. Each room tracks its position and the sockets are used to communciate with the clients, to ensure they remain in sync with the playlist and to provide new tracks when the play queues run out.

This looks like it works pretty well. I just wish the site could better show how the recreations are similar to the originals. It seems like there is a lot of work behind the scenes that the user might not even realize.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy our app. Do you have any specific feedback for us so we can improve?

    • basically i didn't get it. i didn't understand why a given song was playing, why i would use this compared to other source of music playlists. additionally i couldn't go to the next track, which i was expecting to be able to do. at a tech level i didn't understand what you were doing behind the since and why this was a good node project.

Although perhaps not the most innovative hack (very difficult to innovate in this space anyway IMO), it's certainly very well presented and well implemented. A great use of the tech available.

Very cool music app. I would use daily. How did/would you take care of copyrights?

Thanks, glad you liked it. If we were to ever launch this as a real app, then we'd have to ensure it followed the DMCA radio rules (which it doesn't currently) or use another playlist source such as echonest which does follow them instead of a random selection in a genre.

  • contestant

I really, really love the design of this app, everything looks awesome(Hexagons FTW). I think it is a neat idea, but I was kind of expecting more from it I guess.

I also had a few instances where the music would stop playing for 3-5 second intervals, which got a bit annoying when a good song was on.

Sorry about the streaming problems, streaming using using HTML5 is quite tricky and we are trying to pre-buffer to provide a nice and smooth experience.

That's awesome project. Listening to music for the whole day now. It's a pleasure to listen to the music. And I like the design of this project. Definitely, the project to improve further. I think would be good to add player stuff (pause, resume, play, etc.)

Thanks for the feedback, we are planning to release an updated version when the competition ends with improved music selection. We need to implement properly the DMCA rules for radio streaming.

This morning it gave me a good start in the office during work. I joined to the "Dalston Disco Den" room and listened really good oldies. But I've tried to refresh the room three times, I've tried to quit and go back again, but always the same track was the first one (Commodores - I Feel Sanctified) followed by the same playlist :( It would be better with randomized playlists. I missed the "skip" button too, I wanted to jump to the next track. Few fine tunes needed and it gonna be better than an online radio ;)

Unfortunately the persistent play list position is working only in one room. We will release an updated version after the competition :)

I loved the intro video. Very well done! I was unable to create a room though, returning an internal server error whenever I tried. However, everything else was super smooth, and I'm listening to a room as we speak. :-)
