It is a web-based IRC/Shell service with a modern look and features.
It can be run on our server automatically or at user’s custom shell service (almost like ssh+screen+irssi).
Current default webclient can only send and receive messages but that is only client’s missing feature… server already supports everything.
It’s best viewed with Google Chrome.
Please note: It has a nasty bug: when the green light goes on (backend is connected) for the first time the user has to refresh the page before he/she can see other people talk. Speaking still works but you cannot see replies. So, refresh and wait for a moment — it should work then.
The icecapd irc clients are run on local unix accounts that are created when first visiting the site. Linux knows about the accounts via nss-ldap – ldapjs – couchdb.

therazorbladeDoes it actually speak the IRC protocol or is this just a chat server made to look like IRC? Can you use standard IRC clients to talk to your server? I might change my vote based on these questions.
Yes, it uses icecap (http://icecap.irssi2.org/), same protocol as irssi2 is using. You can use irssi2 and our client at the same time on the same session — or any other icecap client. It’s a lot like IMAP but for IRC (and other IMs but I’m not sure if there is any other protocol implemented except IRC yet). We just had to but it on non-standard IRC server because of constant problems with Freenode.
therazorbladeStars revised. I think you would rank higher if you promote the fact that this is both an IRC client and server implementation.
lsrblsSounded great, was unable to log-in or do anything useful with “Backend” light being red… Lost interest and move on. :(
felixgeGreat service. It wasn’t quite clear that the #node.js channel one is being logged into is not on the freenode server, but otherwise it works & looks great. The underlaying technology is also very interesting, great job!
Didn’t work. | |||
How it didn’t work?
Backend light stayed red for six minutes, then I got bored waiting for it to load.
What browser did you use? Refreshing might fix it, too. It has some bugs that we will be fixing soon (on the open source fork of course). At the moment it mostly works only on Google Chrome and needs refreshing once after the green light goes on (maybe before, too).
Firefox 3.6.18
According to my understanding, this is really just a chat broadcast. No other IRC features, right?
It’s currently on channel #node.js at irc.kapsi.fi since we were banned from Freenode #node.js. Sadly because of that there is only our bot talking (and us when we are there). Client has only basic chat + some url features implemented since we ran out of time — the server side shell backend system took too much time to implement. We are going to continue this project and I plan to replace irssi+screen+ssh with it.
fredyatesivI couldn’t make anything happen! I tried posting in the What’s happening field but it didn’t seem to affect anything. I noticed the Custom Guide tab but hopefully those steps aren’t required to use your app.
We had problems with Freenode / #node.js and with too many testers. These should have been fixed now. Please see updated instructions, too. It needs refreshing after the first time connected with green light.
patmeenanAppears to be unstable at the moment (backend status is red though it was green for a few seconds).
Problems should be fixed now. We had problems with Freenode / #node.js and too many testers. We moved to another server.
ssorokaWould be useful if I could get it to work. Server status was always red.

Good concept but it always says “server status red.” If I was supposed to follow the “custom guide” to set it up, that’s awfully daunting, sorry.
We had problems with Freenode / #Node.js — they kept banning and removing bans because they didn’t know what this was. It should be working now — we moved to another IRC server where we know the irc OPs.
See updated instructions, there is also a nasty bug.

Refreshing after the green light turned on still didn’t allow me to see other people talk.
Personally like the minimalistic design. Like the hover preview too. Project looks promising, and its open sourced!
