Moviemaster is an interactive, multiplayer game in which players score points by answering trivia questions about randomly chosen movie clips.
Moviemaster works best on Chrome. Firefox seems to work as well. Other browsers weren’t tested, but Safari won’t work due to this.

giri_sreenivasI really enjoyed playing this. Looking forward to the polished version and playing it with real friends some time.
ragavanFun way to waste a few minutes (and I mean that in a good way, of course). I ended up playing a few rounds by myself. Would have been nice to get more folks in a game, but it still worked. Would have liked to have started a new game right away after one ended instead of being dropped to the lobby. Would have also been neat to pick genres, but overall it was a good concept, well executed.
visnupfun – wow yeah, that is more fun that I would’ve thought. design – yeahh… it’s not so pretty. I did figure out how to use it easily and where things went w/o having to think or get lost. innovation – great use of movieclips to find good clips for a lot of different movies. I’ve never seen this format of a game either (though of course in person I know people do this all the time when random movies are on TV). completeness – -1 for not working in my browser (safari). switched to chrome and was good. another -1 for requiring other people to be on the site to play with. I definitely could’ve used either a demo or a single-player mode even. and I don’t think facebook login was even necessary, just a name would’ve been sufficient.
If you don’t mind, could you be more specific about what you don’t like about the design? We’ve gotten a lot of average/below average reviews on our design, but no one has really gone into detail about what they didn’t like about it. We’re using knockout as a learning experience so detailed feedback is very appreciated.
Also, if you’d like to play a game by yourself, just create a game and after 10 seconds you’ll get an option to start the game even if you’re the only one in the room. The reason we make you wait 10 seconds is because we wanted to encourage players to wait for others.
Thanks for taking the time to judge moviemaster and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
visnupdesign – it was very plain visually. placement and size of everything I think is right. it’s all blocked out correctly because I can find everything I need to find, but visual flair is definitely lacking – colors, fonts, texture. to contrast, the “Create New Game” / “Join Game” buttons look out of place because they’re so visually pretty compared to the rest of the site.
single-player (and even multiplayer) – ah, didn’t realize that. a countdown would’ve been nice because 10 seconds is a very long time to expect something to all of a sudden change when there’s nothing else happening on the screen.
amirmanjiI love movie trivia, so this is right up my alley! It’s a lot of fun; I just wish I had more people to play against. It would be nice to be able to see the correct answers after each round. It would also be cool if you could choose specific genres and eras (ex: 1980’s Sci-Fi). Choosing a question to answer also feels kind of unnecessary. I’d like to be able to just submit an answer and have the app check if my answer is correct for any of the questions. I often found myself trying to enter an answer without having selected a question (or having the wrong question selected).
Thanks for your review and I agree with your last point. Having to choose what question you’re answering can be a real pain. It’s a shame we didn’t realize how unnecessary that was until after knockout was over because it would have been an easy thing to change.
ericfloFun idea! I had a good time with this one. For the year, I often found myself spamming guesses until I got it right, so maybe a mode where you only got a certain number of guesses would be good.
purincessThere’s a huge barrier for me to sign up and then invite 4 other friends to play with me.
very fun game to play. i could see this spawn tv-like gameshows online where anyone can participate with jeopardy or wheel of fortune etc. needs a little polishing, but it is hackathon after all!
mapeLove the idea and the execution was good enough to show there there really is something to it. The site could use a little overall polish though. I’d love to see the ability as room creator to add urls to custom youtube videos as well as the ability to create custom questions. Could be as simple as pasting in a csv file.

jasonhWhile I played it with my friend, it actually happend that my video hanged, and didn’t want to play… but it’s totally not your fault. After polishing design a bit, it could be interesting social game.
I like this, but I feel like it definitely wins out more in the “fun” category. From what I can tell there’s nothing that’s explicitly synchronizing the movie playback across all users, which is a bit of a letdown. This, to me, makes it a wee bit unfair… if I’m on a slower connection or my video download fails, I lose, no? Granted, 48 hours, understandable… great idea, fun to play with, but one that would definitely need a bit more rounding out I think.
chadilac7super addictive! needs more clip variety. i want to know the answers at the end.
They are great ideas, thanks for the comments.
Addictive! I have to bring some friends here with me!
Thank you for your rating, please help us on inviting people.
Worked well. Got some fun clips of Nutty Professor. Scene It is apparently a realyl popular game, so makes sense that this would work on the web. I would work on the design a bit and keep high scores
We have a top 10 list for both points and victories on the main page. You can also see your own victory and point total in the top bar. Is this what you were referring to when you said ‘keep high scores’ or is there another feature you’d like to see added?
Thanks for your feedback.
Yea I missed it. Cool stuff.
I always got a page of un-rendered HTML when trying to play in Safari. Fun game though, if, as a few judges mentioned, a bit lacking in overall design polish – but I’d certainly play this again after the contest (I’d prefer non FB auth tho).
Our idea was using the facebook login, so people don’t have to go through the hassle going through the register process. We need a login to keep track players' scores. Thank you for the comment.
therazorbladeThat’s pretty smart use of available APIs and content. The design can use some help.
jolieodellNot bad, nodemaster, not bad! Making a fun, multiplayer trivia game out of YouTube clips was a bright idea. Sure, it could have had a prettier interface, a more intuitive UX, and smoother gameplay — but it worked great for a hackathon game, and the fun factor was immediately apparent. One bug that really bothered me: I was unable to immediately start a new game in the same room. Once we were done playing 3 lightning-fast rounds, my friends and I were invited to head back to the lobby, where we had to choose new games and wait for all the players to arrive. So yeah, I recommend fixin' that asap. Otherwise, wonderful effort, and I wish you lots of luck!
glenngillenGreat idea, executed well and quite complete. Only criticism is that it’s lacking a little final design polish. Nice job.
Great game! Would be better to have questions specific to a movie
