Tweets on Tape

By 1999-land

Screencast
Quick Intro

Read your friends' tweets out loud and add a new personal dimension to Twitter.

Description

Sure, tweets can have personality, but a 140 character limit puts a ceiling on that. Add a new dimension to your friends' tweets by dusting off your oratory skills and interpreting them in a unique way. Be dramatic or frivolous. Play some Tchaikovsky in the background. Your friend (or maybe a random celebrity you follow) will be delighted (and probably confused) to hear their ephemeral musing portrayed vocally for all eternity. Tweets on Tape is a fun and creative meta layer for Twitter. Try it today.

Judging Instructions

Due to time and spec constraints, recording Tweets on Tape only works in Chrome. Playback of tweet audio is supported in most browsers, including iPhones.

  1. Click "Start Recording"
  2. Twitter will ask you to grant Tweets on Tape access to your incoming tweets
  3. Tweets on Tape will comb through and pick some that it likes using magical Node.js wizardry
  4. Click "skip" if the tweet is boring, or "record" and read it with your own flair
  5. If it sounds good, click "tweet" to tweet the recording to the original author
  6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 ad infinitum

Ha! Awesome idea. I bet this turns into a hit.

Great fun. Polished. I would make it easier to share more broadly.

Really nice presentation and a fun idea.

Found it strange though that the skip button got more visual focus then the play button when viewing a recording (took me a second to figure out where to get the audio started).

I didn't quite understand the need for authenticating Twitter to record a tweet. It is nice that it tries to find relevant tweets from the people I follow. But it would make more sense to me that I post the url to a tweet rather then a random one being picked for me.

It would also be nice to be able to reset a recording if I messed it up in the first take.

Love the idea. Spinning avatar cassette wheels is fun. Actually having to record your own voice is surprisingly terrifying, and it turns out my twitter feed is dull and I need to fix that. Would be nice to have more control to find interesting tweets, like digging them out of my favourites and having a next / prev buttons so you can go back once you realise there are no better tweets... Good work!

The design of the page is a bit outlandish, I feel, and probably needs a little more UX work. Otherwise, a solid, fun gimmick site in the style of Vine, Instagram, etc.

  • judge

The UI on this was great--very elegant and simple to use. The only nit that I had was that it was very hard to re-record a tweet on tape. A filter function of some sort to just select which tweets I wanted to record would have been useful. I have too many subscriptions, so I had to skip a bunch of entries for folks that I would not want to record and resend (e.g. Walt Mossberg).

However, I don't really understand how I would use this instead of Vine--I am undoubtedly not understanding the usage scenario you have in mind here.

Honestly, I couldn't figure out how to use this without giving it permission to post on my Twitter timeline, so... no.

I promise that it doesn't tweet anything unless you explicitly command it to. But, I understand the reluctance to authorize. I encourage you to take a look at #TweetsOnTape on twitter, https://twitter.com/search?q=%23tweetsontape&src=typd&f=realtime, to see some examples of the app in use.

      Thanks.

Did you consider waiting to request an authorization until the user had more context about why the request was being made?

Dangggg this is so much fun! I love the idea of recorded audio and this is a great and cheap way to produce more of it :D! Awesome stuff!

  • judge

While I don't see too much practical use, it is very innovative and pretty entertaining the first few times. :-)

We were shooting more for the fun than the practical.

      Glad you liked it.

    Nice design. Fun concept!

Nits: - "great" tweets weren't that great. I had to go through 6-8 before I found a good one. Too many links. - the click of my trackpad is recorded. Trim the beginning of the audio? - repeat rate is way too quick. should it even repeat? - No way to delete what I've recorded already. I had to refresh the page. - After I've tweeted, it takes me back to my recording, and the only option to get another tweet is to click "Skip"

    Surprisingly, that is crazy fun!

Would be nice to be able to select tweets as well, would love to read some of my work's tweets back to them, especially the ones on workplace relationship policies.

I think the hash tag would be a lot of fun for visually impaired users to follow and listen - my mum would have a blast - she'd probably love reading random other peoples tweets as well.

This works, looks nice and is an interesting concept, but not sure how much time I'd spend with it.

very nice take on online dramatic readings of tweets.

  • judge

    Balderdash

Cool idea. (And a good way to make all your friends hate you.)

Had trouble figuring out how to record at first, because my browser window was too short and you can't scroll down -- had to look at it on a bigger monitor to see everything.

I like that it gives you tweets to work with, but it'd also be cool if you could choose some yourself.

    CARFAX

Interesting idea, it would have been fun to have a gallery of the funniest tweets.

  • judge

Well designed and executed. I can't really say the same for the screencast. What was that? A satire? It would have been nice to actually see a demo in the video instead of a bunch of retakes ;-)

I like the video background... it definitely sets the mood/vibe for the app. The "tape reel" was a nice touch on playback. It would have been nice to browse the real time "tweets on tape" from your home page instead of using twitter search.

So dope, why aren't more people using this so I can hear more audible 140 character masterpieces?

There's no helpful instructions of what this site is about (and what I'm supposed to do). Clicking on the main button brings me to Twitter authorization (which I'm tempted to close). Would be good to see some samples first b4 commited to authorize.

  • contestant

Great idea! Video was fun to watch (I could relate it to my experience recording mine). It could have been helpful to include a small demo in video. Amazing work in 48hrs!

  • contestant

It's not something I would personally use, but I can see people having fun with it.

It's nice to see a project with ffmpeg and the audio/media APIs being used. Pretty polished, and quite fun, but I'm not sure how long it would be before people recorded obscenity instead of the tweets!

Love the idea. Didn't work terribly well for me (hung up on one instance while recording, another while gathering tweet source material) but hope you guys continue to work on it because it could definitely be fun... Imagine having contests to award top place to people reading selected celebrity tweets in a dramatic fashion...

Fun idea. No idea why I would do it, but did work perfectly.

I couldn't get playback to work on Chrome or Firefox. On my macbook air the site height was a little too high so i scrolled down to hit record and then couldn't scroll back up again to read the tweet.

  • judge

    Yahoo!

This is pretty freaking cool, the best part is searching the hashtag and listening to all the tweets already out there in the stream.. This so needs to be used on Google Glass (since I get received mine)..

This is a lot of fun. Dramatic readings for tweets is a fun little toy. Your design didn't fit on my screen and forced me to fiddle with the zoom in order to make it work. You should build a scraper of the NKO site to find all of the judge's Twitter handles and do this for some of their tweets!

Haha. Love the out-takes video. :)

Ahh such a funny idea. Would work great with the Winston Churchill novelty account :)

    Nicely done and fun!

I'd like to be to able to scroll through and pick tweets, or pick from a specific user or search.

      Thanks for the vote.

Picking a specific tweet, or user was something we wanted too, but unfortunately ran out of time.

After review the whole entries directory I've changed my scales

Tweets and audio, great minds think alike ;D unfortunately I couldn't get it to work on Chrome , authorised the app and it got stuck on 'finding great tweets' after refreshing it shows a blank script and the skip button doesn't do anything. Was looking forward to seeing this in action.

  • contestant

Epic win. I think you'd like our idea too (team xyzzy, "Soapbox"). Difference is YOU COMPLETED YOURS EPICLY. Love it. Also, the bozo screencast is another win. Awesome job. I'll definitely use tweets on tape in the future. Bookmarked.

    RivalIQ

Fun idea, although i found i wanted to re-record my message a number of times (not unlike your screencast!), but there wasn't a good/clear way to do it.

  • contestant

I expected some filters, which could do my voice more dramatic. But it is fun idea.

  • judge

Great concept, awesome UX and easy to use. Your promotional video needs some work though :-)

Would be nice to allow me to select from available tweets OR have a random tweet selected.

  • contestant

Totally awesome. Absolutely my pick of the entries I've seen so far. Really dig the use of the tape metaphor too.
